5th Grade has been learning about the rainforest and its four layers. We have researched "why the rainforest is important" and "how we can help save the rainforest." Students have studied text structure, we have learned how to annotate nonfiction articles, and used 4 block writing to make a claim and support it with reasons the rainforest is important. Students have created their own rainforest in the classroom identifying the four layers of the rainforest while adding biodiversity they are learning about through their readings. We are currently working on posters to hang in the school explaining the importance of the rainforest and giving students in other grades ways to help save this important resource. We will end our unit with each student writing an informational piece that requires 2 sources used to find information about an animal that can be found in the rainforest.
